Berkay

Hello I am the guy from Berkay Offenbach. I am 21 months old. My whole life I've been doing with hyperinsulinism and my mom has tried everything to eat something every 3 hours, including nights, and octreotide at a maximum dose pump. But anyway it was increasingly becoming hypoglycaemic and I often had emergency in the hospital. My parents were no longer dared to go away!

In our distress we have entrusted to us by Prof. Mohnike from Magdeburg. This prompted a genetic investigation, and the constellation was typical of a diffuse form. But because the severe hypoglycemia increased despite the high-calorie diet and drugs more and more, he sent us to the PET-CT in the Diagnostic and Therapeutic Center Frankfurter Tor. There also Professor and Professor Mohnike Barthle in the study were present, because we wanted to explore the possibility of surgery. The PET-CT then showed the expected diffuse form, but also individual clusters, indicating a "leopard". Prof. Barthle then has a long talk with my mom and dad and answered all their questions. He has said openly that a cure by surgery can not be promised, but that a recovery is very possible. In the worst case, it remains as it was. And that he would operate his own child as well. My mom trusts him and has traveled to Greifswald.

I also had surgery in minimally invasive keyhole technique. I also had bad luck that my pancreas was indeed infested diffuse, but there were areas that were not very active to almost normal. And I had three major foci, two on the tail and one in the head just above the large bile duct. Prof. Barthle has with laparoscopy only the two foci located in the tail and no more. For if, as done previously and how it is unfortunately still made by some surgeons remove too much pancreatic tissue, then proposes the hyperinsulinism almost always in the opposite: in diabetes, which often occurs later in puberty! The Professor wants Barthle selected in any way and therefore he only removed all the most affected areas.

I was so early in June 2011 with the key-hole surgery in Greifswald was in good shape after two days and have almost no scars. But the best part is that since the surgery, I need no medication and no longer pump! My blood sugar has leveled off during the day in the normal range, but at night he would sometimes even down to a maximum of 2.2 mmol / liter. But since my evening meal is enriched with Mondamin, is no longer a problem. Me and my parents were allowed to sleep through the night for the first time in my life!

9 days after the surgery, we were back home and we can not even believe how radically our lives have changed: no pump and no octreotide more, absolutely no drugs, no night-time awakening, 8 hours of sleep for all! Of course, my mom still regularly measure blood sugar, for a stove - and the above the bile duct - is still with me in it. But he alone seems to be too weak to make me sick, because the blood sugar is like saying since the surgery in order! We are enjoying our new life very much and please press my fingers crossed that it stays that way!
